Marché des Capucins

Dating to 1749, when the Marquis de Tourny organized informal food-selling spots into a proper market near a former Capuchin convent, Les Capucins is Bordeaux's main food market and known locally as the belly of Bordeaux. The current halls were built in 1959 after the original 1881 iron-and-glass structure — modeled on Paris's Baltard halls — was demolished. Spanish immigrant vendors who once resold unsold produce from carts at the entrance gave rise to a trolley-seller tradition still present today. Oyster and wine counters open from early morning.
