Filopappou Hill

Filopappou Hill, also called the Hill of the Muses, rises southwest of the Acropolis and is crowned by the 2nd-century Monument of Philopappos, a marble tomb built for a Roman senator of Commagene royal descent. Pine-shaded paths, some following the line of the old road the philosopher Socrates is said to have walked, climb past the rock-cut chambers known as the Prison of Socrates to the summit. From the top, an unobstructed view faces the Acropolis and Parthenon across a shallow valley, making it one of the city's favoured spots for watching the sunset.
